The depth and beauty of Octavio Paz's poetic and essayistic work, filled with ideas that captured the attention of thousands of readers in Mexico and around the world, turned its author into a figure of extraordinary relevance during the second half of his life. This is evidenced by the vast bibliography surrounding his writings and the considerable number of images of him in magazines and newspapers from numerous countries. However, while he did not shy away from it, Octavio Paz was not a man eager for fame. He was not intoxicated by vanity. He wanted to be read, yes, but he was not concerned with being "known." He knew that fame is a kind of confusion and that poetry imposes strict moral responsibilities – "that is, in large part, the theme of 'A Difficult Apprenticeship,' one of the poems that make up '¿Águila o sol?'" For this reason, he did not easily accept being photographed, and beyond the images that photographers inevitably captured at public events, he often rejected requests from photographers, some of them very prominent. In reality, Paz agreed to be photographed very few times. This book brings together a good portion of the photographs that he consented to or in which he recognized himself, taken by several of Mexico's most distinguished photographers and by his inseparable companion, Marie-José, to whom, as Rafael Vargas points out in the introductory text, we owe the "testimony of a large number of encounters and important moments in the poet's life." This is the first time that such a large number of Octavio Paz's photographs (more than sixty), including some unpublished ones, and several sequences that had never before been published together, have been brought together in a book.
